Tino Rangatiratanga design, kotiro and wahine: The black top represents Te Kore (the void/space), the red bottom represents Papatūānuku (Earth Mother), and the white stylized koru represents Te Ao Mārama (the world of light/unfurling life). The Tino Rangatiratanga flag (Māori national flag) was designed in 1989 by a collective of activists, primarily Hiraina Marsden, Jan Dobson (Smith), and Linda Munn, through the group Te Kawariki.
